Will You Catch the Soul Surfer Wave?

With the current success of against-all-odds, feel-good stories from movies like 127 Hours, The King’s Speech and The Fighter, Hollywood might just be getting a few things right these days.  Everyone loves the redemption story–someone who comes from seemingly insurmountable odds, and is able to gut it out, overcome and discover their life’s purpose and impacting countless people along the way.  Storylines that have a solid redemption story always seem to do well, as evidenced by the box office ticket sales (I blogged about Hollywood’s telling of redemption stories a couple weeks ago…you can check it out here).

There’s another great story of redemption and overcoming tremendous odds coming to theatres April 8th.  Tri Star’s Soul Surfer tells the inspiring true story of champion surfer Bethany Hamilton, who overcame incredible odds to climb back on top of the surfing world, and became an inspiration across the world.  The film also powerfully captures the shared love of her family, her spirit of determination, and her unwavering faith in Jesus Christ. Unlike some ‘Christian’ movies, this one does not have to limp along with a cheap plot-line and poor acting, as Soul Surfer boasts an all-star cast, including Dennis Quaid, Helen Hunt, Anna Sophia Robb, and 2005 American Idol winner Carrie Underwood in her film debut.

You can check out the Soul Surfer Wave website to learn more about the woman and story behind the movie.  You can also download youth group and family discussion starters, bible studies, videos, and other resources designed to spark conversation about faith in Christ, and our ability to “do all things through Him who gives us strength“!

Hopefully you can find good use for this within your family, or for your own reflection…and perhaps you’ll have an opportunity in April to invite a friend to come out and see Soul Surfer with you…and allow for some good follow-up conversation with them later!

Hope you can catch the wave!
